Rune Factory 5 is a charming and expansive fantasy simulation role-playing game (RPG) that seamlessly blends the engaging daily routines of farming and life simulation with exciting action-RPG combat and exploration.

Overview of Rune Factory 5

Rune Factory 5 opens with the protagonist, who can be male or female, named Ares or Alice by default, waking up in the peaceful town of Rigbarth with amnesia. They soon become involved with SEED, the local peacekeeping organization.

With no memories of their past, the protagonist is tasked with helping maintain order in the Norad Kingdom, as mysterious events are causing the runes (which govern the balance between humanity and nature) to go awry. This involves both fighting monsters in dungeons and assisting the townspeople, including running a farm. As the story progresses, the protagonist uncovers the truth about their past and the growing threat to the land.

Gameplay Mechanics

Rune Factory 5 blends traditional RPG elements with farming and life simulation mechanics, offering a variety of gameplay loops:

Farming

Players manage a farm, tilling soil, planting seeds, watering crops, and harvesting produce. Soil quality, crop rotation, and seasonal planting are important concerns. Farm Dragons are introduced, allowing players to establish additional farms on their backs with unique properties.

Combat and Exploration

The game features action-oriented combat where players explore dungeons, defeat monsters, and battle bosses using a variety of weapon types (swords, long swords, dual swords, bows, talismans). Monsters can also be tamed and recruited to fight alongside the player or help with farm work.

Life Simulation and Relationships

Players interact with the residents of Rigbarth, building friendships and deepening relationships through conversation, gift-giving, and completing requests. A significant aspect is the ability to date and eventually marry eligible bachelors and bachelorettes, including the series' first-ever option for same-sex marriage.

Crafting and Cooking

Players can gather materials from the environment and fallen monsters to craft weapons, armor, tools, and accessories. Cooking allows for the creation of dishes that restore health, stamina, or provide other beneficial effects.

Town Development

Players can contribute to the growth and prosperity of Rigbarth by recruiting generic NPCs to work in specific areas, designing town layouts, and participating in festivals.

Daily Loop

The core gameplay involves a daily routine of farming, adventuring, socializing, and completing quests, with the freedom to prioritize activities as desired.

Character Customisation

With that said, Rune Factory 4 included a feature where you could turn the male protagonist into the female protagonist or vice versa. Thus letting you make same-sex couples. Though it wasn’t perfect, as dialogue lines wouldn’t be reversed from one protagonist to another.

That protagonist switch feature was not confirmed pre-release by Marvelous in Rune Factory 5. I haven’t seen any Japanese players confirming it yet either, seeing RF5 has only been out for seven hours as I’m writing this. However, there’s no reason why the feature wouldn’t be back in this sequel. I’ll be sure to tell you if I notice the feature is back, as I’ll be playing Rune Factory 5 myself.
